Team Insights: Building an Unstoppable Team
What makes a team truly unstoppable? Is it talent? Strategy? Luck? The answer lies deeper—it’s about building a cohesive, aligned group of people who share a vision and a purpose greater than themselves. History is full of examples: awe-inspiring cathedrals, groundbreaking discoveries, sports teams that defy all odds, technological revolutions, or even small tweaks to a process that drive big results. At the heart of every accomplishment is grounded in a simple framework: desire, teamwork and culture make it all possible.
So, let’s talk about how you can create a team that not only meets expectations but redefines what’s possible.
The Heart of Every Great Team
Let’s start with a thought experiment. We all admire or want to be a “hero”…a fire-fighter saving someone from a burning building or a neighbor helping when a natural disaster strikes. Imagine your team as a group of heroes (someone who has strength for more than themself) —each one bringing unique strengths, uniting for a collective mission. What could you accomplish if everyone on your team shares a crystal-clear purpose and is fully aligned with it? This can create a multiplier effect, where a small group can have an impact on thousands or millions of people.
As a team leader, your ultimate goal is simple:
Develop an operations management philosophy and structure that is repeatable, scalable, measurable, fosters a culture of continuous improvement and brings out the best in everyone. When this philosophy is implemented, magic happens: you get an engaged workforce, happy customers, and incredible efficiency. But how do you get there? By focusing on three pillars:Desire: The willingness to go “all in” on achieving a vision.
Teamwork: Celebrating disruptions and turning challenges into opportunities.
Culture: Proactively planning and learning from failures—fast.
And here’s the kicker: a team’s culture is the output of its desire and teamwork. Let’s dive into how to build that culture and tap into your team’s hidden potential.
What Holds Teams Back?
Before you can unlock your team’s potential, you need to recognize what’s holding them back. Patrick Lencioni, in his book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, highlights some common barriers:
- Absence of Trust: Without trust, collaboration falls apart. Teams that lack trust operate in survival mode rather than thriving together.
- Fear of Conflict: Healthy conflict sparks innovation. If your team avoids disagreements, they’re missing out on new ideas.
- Lack of Commitment: When there’s no shared commitment, efforts become scattered and unproductive.
Avoidance of Accountability: Great teams hold each other accountable. If this is missing, progress slows.
- Inattention to Results: When personal egos or competing goals take center stage, the team’s collective outcomes suffer.
Think of this list as a checklist. Where does your team stand? The key to overcoming these barriers lies in trust and accountability—they’re the foundation for everything else.

It All Starts with Leadership
Here’s the hard truth: before you can lead others, you’ve got to lead yourself. Your team will reflect the habits, mindset, and energy you bring to the table. Ralph Waldo Emerson put it best:
“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Choose your words; they become actions. Study your actions; they become habits. Review your habits; for they become your character. Your character becomes your destiny.”
So, how do you lay a strong foundation as a leader?
- Master the Basics: Healthy habits like eating well, exercising, and managing your time effectively aren’t just “nice to have”—they’re essential. The energy you bring to your team starts with how you take care of yourself.
- Set a Vision: Without a clear, compelling vision even the most talented team will wander aimlessly. Your vision is the North Star that aligns everyone’s efforts. Make it bold. Make it inspiring. Make it real.
Building the Right Team
A strong vision is only as good as the people executing it. Successful leaders know that teamwork doesn’t happen by accident—it takes careful planning and understanding. Borrowing from John Mackey’s SPICE framework, every team relies on key stakeholders: Suppliers, Partners, Investors, Customers, and Employees. Each plays a vital role in your success.

Within your team, it’s helpful to understand individual contributions and motivations. Team members typically fall into one of four categories:
- Champions: Fully embrace the vision and work tirelessly to advance it.
- Helpers: Contribute when guided but need direction.
- Bystanders: Participate passively and need convincing to take action.
- Resistors: Actively oppose or hinder progress.
Here’s the trick: allocate your energy wisely. Spend 80% of your time on Champions, 15% on Helpers, and only 5% on Bystanders. While Resistors can be noisy, don’t let them dominate your attention. Instead, focus on uncovering the potential in every individual—sometimes resistance is rooted in misunderstanding or external challenges.
Finding and Cultivating Champions
Champions are your greatest asset. They’re the ones who live and breathe your vision, take initiative, and lift the team when times get tough. How do you spot them? Look for these traits:
- A self-motivated, continuous improvement mindset.
- A willingness to align their decisions with the team’s mission.
- Resilience when facing challenges—they don’t get bitter; they get better.
- The ability to represent the team’s values authentically.
One classic example of a Champion comes from Elbert Hubbard’s short book, Message to Garcia. It tells the story of a man tasked with delivering a critical message under dangerous conditions. He doesn’t ask unnecessary questions or make excuses—he just gets the job done. That’s the kind of initiative you’re looking for in your Champions.
